Thelocation
SOKUCU stands on its own, but is part of a larger whole; locally rooted in Nijmegen and connected to the rest of Europe.
Nijmegen
On the Waal, in the heart of the city
SOKUCU finds its place in Nijmegen, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, set on the river Waal. A city with a rich cultural climate and the ambition to become European Capital of Culture in 2033.
With its local ambitions, SOKUCU contributes to a lively and visible cultural climate in the city and the surrounding region.
Local impact
For the neighbourhood, by the neighbourhood
SOKUCU does not want to be an isolated tourist enclave, but to be open to people from the area. Residents of Nijmegen and beyond are actively invited to take part in activities, performances and events through various channels.
By involving the local population, SOKUCU builds a community centred on the exchange of art and culture, where the social side of art and culture has room to bloom.
Artist in Residence
Through the “Artist in Residence” model we make room for European artists. They temporarily become part of SOKUCU, stay longer in the hostel and work on both their own and the collective projects.
At the end of their stay the artists hold an exhibition, creating a beautiful exchange between local and international artists and the visitors. Work can be sold or donated.
Inviting European artists means there is always new work to see within the project’s walls, and it ties into the ambition to position Nijmegen as European Capital of Culture in 2033.
